City of Shawnee

Midland Drive

City staff partnered with the consulting firm Olsson Associates to develop a concept study for the future of Midland Drive from Shawnee Mission Parkway to I-435.

A Neighborhood Meeting was held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. At the meeting, examples of different designs for the stretch of Midland between Shawnee Mission Parkway and I-435 were displayed. Those different designs included things like how the road is laid out, pedestrian and bicycle paths, safety features, drainage options, property impacts, lane modifications and more.

Below you will find the four different conceptual roadway sections that were displayed as well as a potential roadway shift on Midland Drive just south of Shawnee Mission Parkway.  These designs varied from adding bike lanes, a shared use path, sidewalk and curb and gutter throughout the corridor to leaving the corridor exactly as it is today.

The most recent City Council discussion happened at the Council Committee meeting on June 13, 2022. Council directed staff to apply for a federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) that would partially fund the project. The City has received formal notification that the grant funding has been approved.

There will be a project update at the City Council Committee meeting on February 27, 2023.  Staff is seeking direction regarding next steps on the project. The City Council Committee meeting will begin immediately following the regularly scheduled City Council meeting at 6 p.m. at City Hall at 11110 Johnson Drive.
