Calling all teens interested in government! Jump start your career in public service by applying to the Shawnee Future Leaders program and joining the inaugural class. Chosen teen leaders will meet once a month from September to April and learn through hands-on work just what it’s like to be a public servant, whether that’s a firefighter, city manager, or elected official. The program will culminate with a community service project, awarding the class with real-life experience with guidance from City Staff members.
The program will conclude with a banquet for program graduates, where they will be awarded the Shawnee Future Leader Fit for Public Service and Leadership Certificate from the Mayor and City Manager.
This program serves both as a great gateway to individuals seeking public sector employment instead of a four-year university or as an open door into many college programs that highlight political science, government, business administration, and more. Mentorships with City staff based upon interests and connections made during the program will also be available to members of the Future Leaders program as they graduate and continue forward to wherever their new public service experience will take them.
Shawnee Future Leaders is currently accepting applications for all 9-12th graders until June 15, 2023. Preference will be given to Shawnee residents, but all area students are encouraged to apply! If you would like to apply, please complete the application and return it to Kate Kinkaid at
[email protected] by June 15th, 2023.
