Midland Drive

City staff partnered with the consulting firm Olsson Associates to develop a concept study for the future of Midland Drive from Shawnee Mission Parkway to I-435.

A Neighborhood Meeting was held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. At the meeting, examples of different designs for the stretch of Midland between Shawnee Mission Parkway and I-435 were displayed. Those different designs included things like how the road is laid out, pedestrian and bicycle paths, safety features, drainage options, property impacts, lane modifications and more.

At the Council Committee meeting on June 13, 2022. Council directed staff to apply for a federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) that would partially fund the project. An additional project update was provided at the City Council committee meeting on February 27, 2023. The City Council decided not to pursue the proposed improvements that were tied to federal funding and asked staff to investigate other options.

A project update was provided at the City Council Committee meeting on April 24, 2023. Staff presented a variety of new road configuration options for the Council Committee. Staff was directed to investigate the possibility of receiving STBG federal funds for Option 2b, which includes 4' bikes lanes and a 5' sidewalk on the north side of Midland Drive. Audio from the meeting can be found here.
