Crews Investigating Possible Underground Fuel Leak

Possible Underground Fuel Leak
Posted on 03/07/2022
There are new developments in the investigation into an underground fuel leak near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Pflumm.

You may have noticed crews out with equipment digging near that area. Investigators have narrowed in on the source of the leak but have not confirmed the exact location yet. We do know the fuel is leaking into Johnson County Wastewater’s sanitary sewer system. Crews will be working near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Pflumm until the leak is found and a plan is developed to fix it.

Crews are testing and monitoring air levels frequently. While the health and safety risks to residents and businesses are constantly being evaluated, those risks appear to be low. People may notice the fuel smell (not natural gas), particularly from a p-trap that is usually located in a basement. If you smell fuel inside your home or business, leave the building and call 911 immediately.

Officials from the City of Shawnee, along with the Shawnee Fire Department, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, Johnson County Wastewater, Johnson County Emergency Management and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment are involved in the investigation that started in early July.

You can plan to check back here for updates as we address this situation.
