Stormwater Detention Facilities Inspection & Certification
The City of Shawnee is conducting a preliminary inspection, beginning
the summer of 2008, of the Stormwater Detention Facilities that exist in
the City. The purpose of this inspection is to provide information to
the property owners regarding what may be required of them in order to
meet requirements for certification of their detention facility. City
Code requires Engineering certification of detention facilities by May
1st of each year.
The intent or function of stormwater detention facilities is to capture excessive runoff resulting from storms in developed areas in order to minimize the potential for flooding downstream. City Code requires property owners who have a detention facility on their property to conduct necessary maintenance and to annually “…furnish certification by a Kansas licensed professional engineer to the City Engineer that the facility has full storage capacity and all inlet and outlet structures are fully functional.” for that detention facility (SMC 11.24.160 - Annual Certification).
The City has hired the Peridian Group, Inc. to conduct this preliminary inspection. Letters will be sent out regarding the results of this preliminary inspection with further information about certification requirements.
