PotholesThe City of Shawnee, Kansas Public Works Department repairs hundreds of potholes and pavement failures each year. A pothole (also referred to as a chuckhole) is a depression in the surface of a roadway where a portion of the road material has broken away, leaving a hole. Most potholes are formed from cracks caused by movement of the pavement surface when vehicles (especially trucks) travel on a street. When many cracks develop in a weak spot, and interlock in a pattern known as "alligator cracking". The chunks of pavement between cracks are worked loose and may eventually be picked out of the surface by continued wheel loads, thus forming a pothole. During the winter months, the formation of potholes is accelerated by cold temperatures, as water expands when it freezes and puts more stress on cracked pavement. Once a pothole forms, it grows through continued movement and displacement of broken chunks of pavement. If a pothole fills with water the growth may be accelerated, as the water 'washes away' loose particles of the road surface as vehicles pass. Potholes on major thoroughfares like Shawnee Mission Parkway, Quivira Road, or Johnson Drive receive higher priority and are repaired within 72 hours of being reported. The average response time on residential streets is three to five working days. Potholes can be conveniently reported: 1. On-line "Citizen Service Request to provide the location of the pothole and any other pertinent information. Include your name and home phone number. 2. By phone: Leave a message on the City Hall 24-hour voice mail line at (913) 631-2500 or contact the Public Works Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, (913) 631-2500, Extension 230. |
