The Shawnee Police Department is dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life for more than 50,000 citizens and all those who work here or visit the City each day. Our Mission Statement indicates our commitment to provide comprehensive law enforcement services in a fair and professional manner. The department achieves this goal through the efforts of its 90 sworn officers and 19 support personnel.

In 2006, Business Week selected the City of Shawnee as one of the 25 best affordable suburbs in the United States. The company cited several distinguishing factors which weighed into the City's selection, including a low crime rate. Shawnee's violent crime index score of 33 was lower than the average of all 25 suburbs selected (54), and the state and national average (100). The City of Shawnee is proud to recognize the police department's efforts in modern patrol tactics, interdiction techniques, crime prevention and criminal investigations as reasons for the relatively low crime rate.

The Police Department has three different Divisions as well as a Professional Standards Unit The Divisions are supervised by an officer of Captain's rank.  The Professional Standards Unit is supervised by an officer of Lieutenant's rank.

• Patrol Division - calls for service, crisis situations, district patrol, Traffic unit, S.T.A.R. Team, Community Service Officers.
• Investigations Division - investigation of reported crimes, computer crime, narcotic investigations.

Staff Services Division is comprised of several units which support all divisions of the Police Department. A Division Commander of Captain's rank supervises all aspects of the Division. One sergeant is assigned to supervise the Records Unit and the Community Policing Unit. Another sergeant oversees the Police Communications Unit.

Professional Standards Unit was established as part of the department's commitment to provide comprehensive law enforcement services in a fair and professional manner.  The unit's main responsibility is to oversee the professional conduct of the police officers and manage the training of those officers.  As an extension of the Chief's office, the unit reports directly to the Chief of Police.

The unit is supervised by a lieutenant and is composed of one training sergeant and one training officer.  The lieutenant is in charge of investigations into allegations of officer misconduct, critical incidents (i.e. officer involved shooting) and after action reviews of incidents such as motor vehicle pursuits and use of force reports.  The sergeant directs the training of each officer in the department.  The sergeant also ensures each officer meets and completes the necessary state required training each year.  The officer assigned to the unit handles the scheduling of training and resources, department firearms training, and other tasks related to officer training.

The Shawnee Police Department has 111 full-time employees, 90 of those are commissioned Police Officers.
