Quality Of Life

Adopted by City Council January 12, 1998

Although an elusive concept, difficult to both quantify and define, quality of life in Shawnee is something each of us seeks to achieve, for ourselves, our families, and our community. Defining quality of life in Shawnee requires both an awareness and appreciation of who and what we are now, where we have been, and a vision of that ideal future state we hope to achieve. It requires that we do some soul searching, to determine if we are willing and able to take the steps necessary to make our dream a reality.

We envision Shawnee as a safe and clean community with a tremendous community spirit, an excellent quality of life, and as a great place to live, work, and raise a family. We take great pride in our community’s history and choose to remember and celebrate that history through historical preservation and celebrations. Through careful planning and financial decisions, we have developed an infrastructure which serves the community well, moving traffic quickly through the city’s streets, providing easy access from our homes to our many shopping centers. Our streets, curbs, and sidewalks are well maintained and quickly repaired. Our tremendous civic pride is evidenced throughout our city by our manicured yards and well-maintained homes. We place great emphasis on our recreational amenities. Our parks, walking trails, and bike paths are numerous, and spread throughout the community. Our recreational facilities and programs provide additional opportunities for sports and relaxation, with an equal emphasis on arts and humanities. Our housing stock is diverse, offering affordable housing choices. We are home to many fine businesses, making it possible to both live and work in Shawnee. We have two excellent school systems, with neighborhood schools located close to our homes. We have consistently maintained a low crime rate, and our emergency response times are excellent.

We have a caring and responsive government and an involved community where that volunteer spirit is still alive and well. Our city administration is responsible, efficient, and effective. It is with great pride that we say, "This is the City of Shawnee. This is our home."
