Fire TrainingThe Shawnee Fire Department spends many thousands of hours each year in training. These trainings may include maintaining proficiency with current skills or learning new techniques. In addition physical fitness remains a high priority with members using weight equipment or cardio routines to keep up with the demands of our job. Heavy RescueRecently the department began a training program dealing with disasters. With the addition of the Rescue 71 and its heavy rescue tools the department has trained a group of instructors on various skills to assist in debris removal and building stabilization. Ice and Swift Water RescueThe SFD has the capability to effect a rescue that could occur in or around our numerous ponds lakes and streams. We train for the possibility of someone breaking through the ice or becoming stranded on the Kansas River. In addition we have provided safety for the Polar Bear Plunge which has gained valuable experience for our crews. FitnessFirefighting is a strenuous job demanding physical and mental stamina. Firefighters are encouraged to maintain a high level of fitness. Each year we undergo a full medical physical with a treadmill test to help identify and issues and prevent health problems in the future. The department provides fitness equipment for use during on-duty hours and the city has provided opportunities at local fitness centers for firefighters to work-out off duty. In addition there are several peer fitness consultants who can help a firefighter customize a plan to help them with their fitness goals.
