Senior Citizen Snow Removal Program

The Shawnee Fire Department began its residential snow removal program in the winter of 1984. Since that time we have assisted hundreds of Shawnee residents with their driveway snow removal who are either senior citizens (65 years of age or older), physically impaired, or residents, who for medical reasons should not be shoveling snow.

The primary goal of the snow removal program is to make the home accessible for only the most urgent reasons, such as meal or medicine deliveries or to take the resident to the most necessary doctor or hospital visits. To be included with the snow removal program the resident, or a friend or relative of the resident must come to the Shawnee Fire Department Headquarters at 6501 Quivira Road and complete a short application form.

The snow removal program is put into effect after each snowfall of FOUR OR MORE INCHES. Once the City snow plowing equipment has completed its work in the residential neighborhood, our snow removal equipment will be dispatched to the homes of the residents on our list. When the Fire Department snow removal equipment arrives at your home the operator will back into your driveway as far as possible, lower the snow removal blade and plow as much snow out of your driveway as possible. This includes the snow that was pushed into your driveway by the City snow plow. The program DOES NOT INCLUDE THE SHOVELING OF SNOW FROM PORCHES, STEPS, SIDEWALKS OR OTHER WALKING SURFACES.

Since our snow removal list is quite lengthy, we ask your patience while you wait for us to arrive. Remember...our program is activated only after the streets have been cleared by the city. It may be anywhere from 1 to 3 days after the snowfall before all driveways are plowed.

The snow plow list is renewed on an annual basis. In an effort to make it easier on our senior citizens and disabled residents, the fire department does all renewing by phone. This means that in early fall of each year a member of the Shawnee Fire Department will contact you by phone to renew your participation in the snow removal program. Please keep in mind; should you recommend someone to the program who has not participated before, they will still need to come into the fire department for the initial application during our normal business hours: Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
