Fire Prevention
Fire
prevention is a never ending job that is carried out by the fire service every
single day of the year. But each year the fire service sets aside one week to
remember our fallen brothers and sisters and to place a special emphasis on fire
safety and fire prevention. Each year this week is centered around October 9th
which is the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This year the week
of October 9, 2006 will begin fire prevention week across the United States.
The
Shawnee Fire Department was no exception, scheduling appearances at the local
grade schools to visit with the children about fire safety. The focus this year
was on the kindergarten, first and second grade students. The students were
given fire safety coloring books provided by the Shawnee Fire Department
followed by a fire prevention talk by firefighters and a tour of the fire
apparatus. The Shawnee Fire Department was able to contact over 2500 students
with their presentations.
