Press Release - Shawnee Receives GFOA Budgeting Award

February 26, 2007

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the City of Shawnee GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for their commitment to the highest principles of governmental budgeting. This program was established by GFOA in 1984 to recognize exemplary budget documentation by public entities. This award is presented annually for the current fiscal year.

This is a significant achievement for the Governing Body and City staff. The 2007 budget process was a very challenging one. Mayor Jeff Meyers directed staff to analyze the long term financial picture of the City and develop a plan to ensure Shawnee continues to be a fiscally sound community. This award recognizes that accomplishment of responsible financial management. The award focuses on the following criteria presenting the budget document as a:

  1. policy document,
  2. a financial plan,
  3. an operations guide, and
  4. a communications device.

Only 1,069 public entities in the United States and Canada received the award this year.

Shawnee’s 2007 Budget document is available online, or you can request a cd-rom version by calling City Hall at (913) 631-2500. A condensed version of the budget is also available on the website by clicking on the link to the 2007 Budget in Brief.
