Garage Sales

Permit

The City of Shawnee does not issue or require a permit for garage sales.

Number of Sales

You may have two garage sales per calendar year at your residence.

Location

You must confine your sale to your garage, house, driveway or yard. Do not cross into your neighbor's yard or public right-of-way.

Length of Sale

Most residents advertise their garage sale over a three day period. If you need more time for your sale, City ordinance allows for sales lasting five days.

Hours of Operation

You may conduct your garage sale between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Make sure that everything is cleaned up and removed from the driveway, yard or outside area to an inside location by 8:00 p.m. each day.

Signs - We understand that signs are necessary for garage sales. They are permitted as long as they are taken down one day after the sale and follow the guidelines below:

  • Number of Sign
    You may have one sign at the sight of the sale and two signs off the premises of the sale. We understand that signs are necessary for garage sales. They are permitted as long as they are taken down one day after the sale and follow the guidelines below:
     
  • Size Limits
    Your garage sale sign should not be more than three square feet in area and must not be illuminated.
     
  • Location
    Signs must be located at least 10 feet from the edge of the street pavement or behind any existing public sidewalks.
     
  • Prohibited Sign Locations
    Utility poles -
    Do not put your sign on utility poles or street signs.
    Park Ground -
    Do not put your signs on park ground.
    Private Property -
    Do not place your sign on private property unless you have permission of the owner. If you do not have permission, either the owner or the City will remove and dispose of the sign.
    Highway Rights-of-Way -
    Do not place your signs on highway rights-of  way.

If you place your signs in any of these areas, the Police Department, Public Works or the Parks and Recreation Department will confiscate and dispose of your sign. In addition, you could be subject to a $500 fine.

Violations

Persons convicted of violations of the Garage Sale Ordinance are subject to fines of up to $500. Each day a violation of the ordinance continues is considered a separate violation.
