Boards and CommissionsThe City has a variety of boards and commissions that act as advisory boards to the City Council. The members of each of these bodies are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Governing Body. On this page:
Application to ServeServing on a board or commission offers Shawnee residents an extraordinary opportunity to participate in the City's governmental affairs. The most important qualifications for serving are an interest and willingness to serve. To serve on a City’s board or commission, submit a letter of interest, indicating which board or commission you are interested in serving on, with a resume to the Mayor’s Office at City Hall, 11110 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203. For a position on the Parks and Recreation Board contact your Councilmember and let them know you are interested. Letters of interest are always welcome and are generally held for one year. As vacancies occur, appointments are recommended by the Mayor and are approved by the City Council. In some instances, the Mayor may ask for a recommendation from specific council members to insure a broad representation from throughout the community. Bicycle Advisory Committee: Meets four times per year. The body consists of five members, all of whom are active bicyclists, with at least four Shawnee residents. Members serve two-year staggered terms. This committee monitors the community's bicycle friendly status, and makes recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Board of Zoning Appeals: Meetings are the 3rd Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and only held when an appeal is scheduled. This body consists of seven members who hear appeals concerning the zoning ordinance. Members serve three-year terms.
Civil Service Commission: Meetings held when needed. This body consists of five members who serve three-year staggered terms. The commission's charge is to hear disciplinary appeals from police officers.
Code Board of Appeals: Meetings held when needed The body consists of five members who hear appeals concerning the City's building codes. Members serve five-year terms.
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board: Meetings are the first Thursday at 5:30 p.m. This body consists of nine members who serve three year staggered terms recommended for appointment by the Ward Councilmember. Members advise the Mayor and City Council in planning, maintenance, and operation of all recreation areas and facilities. Ward One

MAYOR’S APPOINTMENT (AT LARGE)
Planning Commission: Meetings are held the first and third Mondays at 7:30 p.m. This body consists of 11 members who hear requests for zoning changes and approve development plans for new business sites and subdivisions, making sure that the plan complies with City ordinances and the Comprehensive Plan. Members serve three-year terms.
Solid Waste Management Council: Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) formed the Solid Waste Management Council in order to provide guidance in development of solid waste management policies in the region. Several other cities in Johnson County are also represented on the Council.
