To view a KMZ file you must have Google Earth installed on your PC. Google Earth is a free download. The current version is 5.0.

To view a Map file, click on a file name.

Depending on the Internet Browser you are using and its settings, one of the following could occur:

1. The KMZ file will be automatically saved to your PC and opened. Google Earth will open and zoom to the extent of the map file.
2. The file will be saved to your PC and the file location will open in a window. Click on the .kmz file name. You might be prompted to Open or Cancel the file, select Open. Google Earth will open and fly to the extent of the file.
3. You will be prompted to Save or Cancel the file. Select Save the file. Once the file is saved to your PC, open the file and Google Earth will zoom to the map extent.
4. If the file ask you to save as a zip file, select Save, and save to a location on your computer (i.e. desktop) and then rename .zip file to .kmz (i.e. police_report.kmz). A rename box will appear asking you "if you are sure you want to change it?" click yes.

The KMZ map files are added to the Temporary Places folder in Google Earth. When you exit Google Earth, you will be prompted if you would like to save your temporary places folder. If you select yes, you can end up with multiple copies of the maps which can slow down the program.
