The City of Shawnee is committed to environmental sensitivity and the pursuit of sustainability. Below are some of the major ongoing projects undertaken by the City in this area.

Policy Statements/Administrative Codes - The City has adopted one policy statement and three administrative codes that promote sustainable actions within City operations.

EECBG - Through the 2009 federal stimulus, the Department of Energy started the Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). The City of Shawnee was one of the 10 formula cities within Kansas to receive money.

Shawnee Green TeamGreen Team - The City of Shawnee has an in-house Green Team that meets on a quarterly basis and discusses ways the City can be more sustainable. Some highlights of the group are its work on the E-Waste recycling, recycling in City Hall, water bottle policy, no idling policy, Clean Commute, and the Green Map.

Parks Recycling - The City of Shawnee’s Park and Recreation Department strives for sustainability. Some of the ways the Department has done this is through its parks and event recycling. In 2009, the Parks Department collected 75 bags of recyclables within the City parks. The Parks and Recreation Department began event recycling in June 2009 at Old Shawnee Days. As of November 2009, they have collected 161 bags of recyclables at City events.
