Can I sell items from a roadside stand?

No. City ordinance prohibits using any public sidewalk, street or public place in the city to exhibit goods, wares and merchandise.

Does the City have a smoking ordinance?

Yes, smoking is prohibited in public places or in public meetings except in designated smoking areas. The proprietor or manager of a public place establishes what percentage of area is posted and designated as a smoking area. City ordinance does not limit the percentage. Signs must be clearly posted stating that smoking is prohibited by law and designating smoking rooms or areas as places that smoking is permitted.

"Public places" are enclosed indoor areas open to the public or used by the general public including restaurants, retail stores, health care institutions, schools, libraries, courtrooms, state, county or municipal buildings, restrooms, grocery stores, museums, theaters, auditoriums, arenas and recreational facilities.

Does the City have Truck Routes?

Yes. The following traffic ways are designated as truck routes for the City of Shawnee and apply to vehicles that are 1-1/2 tons or more:

  • K-7 Hwy (North city limit to south city limit)
  • Shawnee Mission Pkwy (East city limit to K-7 Hwy)
  • Interstate Highway I-435 (North city limit to south city limit)
  • Switzer Rd (75th St to south city limit)
  • Nieman Rd (75th St to south city limit)
  • 75th St (Nieman Rd to east city limit)
  • Any street which is a connecting link of the state highway system
  • Any truck 8 tons or less may operate on County Line Road (east city limit to west city limit)

Vehicles carrying goods, merchandise or other articles to or from any location must stay on a designated truck route until reaching the nearest point of exit to the location, deliver or receive goods, and then return to the nearest point without proceeding any further.

What is required for a Soliciting Permit?

If you travel by foot or vehicle, from place to place, house to house, or street to street, taking orders for the sale of merchandise or personal property for future delivery, or for future services to be performed, whether or not you carry a product sample or collect advance payments on such sales, you must have a soliciting permit.

Applications for solicitors permits are available from the Licensing Division, (913) 631-2500, x-240 and require a $5.00 fee. Each solicitor's application is investigated by the Police Department. If information stated therein is found to be untrue or the applicant's character or business responsibility is unsatisfactory, the application will be disapproved and no license will be issued.

You must carry the solicitor's permit and a copy of your business license with you at all times when soliciting and present it upon request to any resident or officer of the city. A solicitor's permit is valid for 30 days.

What if my organization wants to solicit donations?

If you are soliciting for a charitable non-profit organization, you should forward a letter to the Deputy City Clerk, 11110 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203 indicating the dates and the areas in the City from which you be will soliciting donations. The City feels that requiring a letter can help protect its citizens from fraudulent concerns and at the same time assist legitimate fund raising activities.
