Public Safety Campus Open House and Ribbon CuttingSeptember 20, 2008 Event: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Public Safety Campus Near Completion... Join us on Saturday, September 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as we celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at the new Public Safety Campus. The central location of the facility on the northeast corner of Interstate 435 and Johnson Drive at 5850 Renner Road, holds great expectations for future service to the citizens of Shawnee. The complex includes facilities for Municipal Court, Police, and Fire personnel. City staff will be busy moving operations to the campus throughout August and September 2008. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
The history of this project dates back to 2001 when City and community leaders recognized the need to conduct a facility study for the existing Police Department, Municipal Court and the Fire Department. It was determined that any type of renovation would not be cost effective, and the current facilities had no room for expansion. When sales tax funding was approved for the project, the decision was made to use the design-build process to construct the new facilities. In 2006, McCownGordon contractors and Hoefer Wysocki Architects were chosen for the project. Work began shortly thereafter in June of 2007. The project has been designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. Citizens showed overwhelming support for Shawnee's public safety needs, passing a 1/8 cent sales tax to fund the project. Construction would not have been possible without that public support, and it is for that reason Police Department, Municipal Court, and Fire Department personnel would like to invite the public to tour the new facilities as part of the 2008 Open House.
