Building Permit Guidelines for Retaining Walls
Permits are required for retaining walls over 4' in height as measured from the
bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. Approval must also be obtained from the
Planning Department prior to construction for any
retaining wall on commercial property, regardless of height. All work must comply with the
1994 Uniform Building Code. Work in the regulatory floodplain must comply with all
federal, state and city regulations and copies of any required federal, state or county
permit must be obtained prior to and submitted with the city permit application.
